Access to Healthcare
Disease Prevention
Healthcare in Nigeria faces many challenges due to financial costs, a limited number of trained medical personnel, and a lack of infrastructure. Women and children are vulnerable, with almost 1,000,000 women and children dying each year from mostly preventable causes.
Maternal mortality is a direct reflection of the state of healthcare in a country and, by definition, affects the most vulnerable members of our society (6). In Nigeria, the maternal mortality rate is 576 out of 100,000 (7). Nigeria makes up less than two percent of the world's population, but they account for ten percent of maternal deaths (7). In comparison, the maternal mortality rate in developed countries is 12 out of 100,000 (8). These numbers are vastly different due to several factors, with poverty and access to healthcare being significant factors. ADA OKO USA understands that access to health care is essential to women's empowerment. We desire to engage in community outreach programs to educate women about the importance of healthcare. In addition, we aim to improve local hospitals so that they are more accessible to the community.
