Anambra State
Oko is a town located in Orumba North local government of Anambra State, in southeastern Nigeria. The town is made up of five smaller villages: Ezioko, Eziabor, Okeani, Ihengwu, and Ifite.
Agriculture is a stable industry in Oko, with the added production of cassava, yam, banana, and many other crops. The entrepreneurial spirit was cultivated in Oko when the first palm oil processing plant was opened in the 1920s. Since its inception, Oko has been at the forefront of the industry.
In 1979, the first polytechnic institution in Anambra State was founded in Oko. The institution marked the beginning of western education in southeastern Nigeria, and it has continued to excel ever since. The Federal Polytechnic in Oko is known worldwide as the College of Arts, Science, and Technology.
Oko's most famous son, His Excellency Late Chief (Dr.) Alex Ifeanyichukwu Ekwueme was the first executive Vice-President of Nigeria. He was an architect and founded the first architectural firm in Oko. His philanthropic efforts were credited for educating many youths in Nigeria and abroad.
